How To Set Up A Home Gym

how to set up your own home gym

To have my own home gym has been a dream for me for so long! For more than a decade actually… but like everything else, it takes time to achieve a goal. My husband has been having longer days off due to the pandemic which allows us to do more home projects and organization. My gym used to be in the garage which didn’t work out too well. It smelled like cars and gas, ewh, and it wasn’t exactly usable all year long.

This room is actually my craft room and is located next to the garage. The previous owners had it built for them. She used to be a quilt maker and this room was filled with sewing equipments. They even added a small heat pump here so that way I could have a heater for the cold winters and air conditioning for the hot months. I don’t like hot season, haha.

THE ENTRANCE

This is how the entrance area looks like. I sort of created a “welcome” area by putting the dumbbell rack here as a barrier. This dumbbell rack is so amazing because this dumbbell rack one in white is three tiered and the top part is a shelf. This makes it easy for me to store my workout gloves, hip bands, smaller dumbbells, and even my big fat exercise ball! If you don’t care for a shelf one, they also have a dumbbell rack in black with three racks!

Inner thoughts: When I started working out last year, I knew I was meant to workout at home. I mean, I work at home… why not work out at home. Having three young kids all in school, I need to be available for them just in case. Those “just in cases” have happened many times already. “Hi, we have Ezekiel here in the nurse’s office. He’s not feeling very well…”. What was meant to cater to my kids actually made it really amazing for me in the long run. I don’t have to drive anywhere to workout, I can literally shower right after, no recurring payments, and I don’t have to share equipment with others. Hahaha “let me sanitize that real quick……………….” Especially now, during this crazy pandemic, everything is CLOSED and everything is selling out. I’m glad that this is something I don’t have to worry about. I do believe that if fitness is very important to you, I recommend to try to have at least dumbbells or bands at home that way if something happens, you don’t have to worry!

Right next to the doors are shelves from IKEA. These are called the KALLAX and it comes in different varieties, too. Different colors and there are choices of number of columns and rows. Since my gym room is shared with my craft room, the top four are for painting items and other miscellaneous things. The bottom four are for extra gym items that I probably may not use frequently.

THE WORKOUT SPACE

I decided to place the elliptical and the treadmill on the left side so that way the TV can easily be turned towards me. I LOVE watching tv shows or movies while I work out, it passes the time so fast! Speaking of this TV, this is the ROKU TV by TCL. It’s installed with a wall mount that allows me to adjust the angle. The TV comes with a remote, but you can download an app right on your phone. The apps that come with the tv are Youtube, Netflix, Spotify, and I’m pretty sure there are lots more.

By the way, the elliptical and the mirror were found on Offer Up. I can imagine how costly this would’ve been otherwise. I remember looking for gym mirrors online and I was shocked at the price. There are lots of people who are moving, sizing down, or just want to get rid of what they don’t use anymore and they list all kinds of awesome things on Offer Up. Check there before you spend big money!

In front of the mirror, I’ve placed a rug there as I prefer to do abs or any other floor exercises on a rug. It just feels better! In front of the rug, I do have my workout mat. This setting seems to workout really well so far. Oops, I forgot to take pictures of the workout bench, but it’s there right on the left side of me.

Let me talk about what I do in my workouts real quick! I have been working out with Sydney Cummings for a year exactly this month. Oh my, she’s awesome! She uploads NEW workout videos every single day on YouTube. FOR FREE, you guys. None of that youtube plus or whatever it’s called… F-R-E-E 99. Literally, high definition workouts for fuhreeeeee. Ok, I got that out of the way. Some background on her is that she’s actually a trainer and not a wannabe one haha. I’ve learned so much just from doing her workouts.

If you are looking for nutrition help, accountability, and more in depth knowledge of it as a whole, she does have something called a Sydney Squad and that is something you have to pay for. After a year of working out with her, I made the big move to join and I am LOVING IT SO FAR! This mama needs some big nutrition and accountability help.

Do you notice my phone tripod? LOL. I feel silly sometimes recording myself workout, but it helps with noticing correct or incorrect forms, and the overall journey. It also offers some accountability on myself to do the workout, put my 100% and to finish it. I’ve been consistently doing this for this month and I cannot wait to see my progress later on.

THE BEVERAGE AREA

Last but not least… is the beverage area! Here is the other kind of the Ikea kallax shelves. This is four columns and four rows. I have my water dispenser right next to it. I love this, you guys, it is the primo hot and cold water dispenser. If I want hot coffee and tea, Primo got me. If I want my super cold water to hydrate and cool myself off because of these crazy workouts, Primo GOT me.

I’m using the closest shelves to the gym space for the beverage items. On the top right, I’ve got honey, stroopwaffles, stirring spoons, and hand sanitizer. Right next to that, I’ve got my Rae Dunns! Got to have my Rae Dunn mugs in here. On the bottom of those, I’ve got mason jars filled with tea, cocoa, and instant coffee. I also have some recyclable, disposable hot cups there as well.

Since this room is right next to the garage, another plus of having the beverage area here is that whenever my husband does his projects or doing some work on the cars in the garage, he doesn’t have to go allllllllllll the way in the house just for some water. Hehe. If it’s cold and tired, he can make himself some KOPIKO for a pick me up! What’s KOPIKO? Delicious Indonesian coffee is what.

Oh yeah, on the lower shelves, I have sweat towels to wipe off my sweaty face and body. I’m telling you guys, try out her workouts and you will love it!
